HVAC costs in Florida

Florida runs air conditioning like no other state. About 3,409 cooling degree days against just 566 heating degree days means the AC operates nine to twelve months across most of the state; in Central and South Florida, heating is nearly an afterthought. That is why straight-cool systems with electric strip heat and heat pumps dominate here, and gas furnaces are uncommon.

Humidity is the defining engineering constraint. In climate zone 2A, latent (moisture) load is as important as temperature. An oversized unit cools the air quickly, short-cycles, and never wrings the moisture out — you get a house that is cold and clammy at the same time. Correct sizing and dehumidification matter more than a raw SEER2 number.

Where you live inside Florida moves the numbers too. Salt-laden coastal air corrodes condenser coils and cabinets, measurably shortening outdoor-unit life near the ocean versus inland installs. And in Miami-Dade and Broward, the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone adds wind-load tie-down and product-approval requirements for condensers.

Check the ductwork before blaming the equipment. A Florida Solar Energy Center field study found return duct leaks averaging 10% of air-handler flow, and duct repair cut air-conditioning energy use by 18% — with the repairs paying back in under two years (about $200 per home in 1990 dollars, roughly $490 today).

Two Florida facts work in your favor. Permitting is unusually uniform: the statewide Florida Building Code means every jurisdiction requires a mechanical permit and inspection for a changeout.
