An unlicensed HVAC install is a problem long after the truck leaves: it can void equipment warranties, fail inspection, and complicate an insurance claim. Most states publish contractor licensing as public record — this tool searches those records directly.
Coverage
Florida launches first, using the Department of Business and Professional Regulation's public licensee records. Additional states are added as their licensing boards' data is verified — we would rather cover one state accurately than fifty badly.
What to verify before you hire
- The license is current — not expired, not "null and void."
- The name on the license matches the company quoting you. Borrowed and rented licenses are common.
- The license class covers the work. Some classes are limited by system size or scope.
- The contractor pulls the permit, not you. If a contractor asks the homeowner to pull it, that is a signal worth pausing on.
