HVAC rebates in North Carolina

Duke Energy dominates the North Carolina rebate picture. Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress customers can get a $500 Smart $aver rebate for a qualifying high-efficiency heat pump or HVAC replacement in an existing home — raised from $350 effective January 1, 2025, per Duke’s own newsroom, and approved by the NC Utilities Commission. One honest caveat: the $500 amount is verified through Duke’s newsroom, but the equipment-level qualification specs are not — Duke’s program page blocked our verification attempt — so confirm the exact efficiency tiers with Duke or your contractor before you buy a specific unit expecting the rebate.

Dominion Energy North Carolina, serving the northeastern corner of the state, is the outlier: it lists no standard heat pump or central AC replacement rebate at all. Its residential program pays up to $400 for an eligible heat pump water heater, and free HVAC tune-ups exist only under income- and age-qualifying assistance. If you are a Dominion NC customer, do not budget a rebate into your replacement quote.

The state’s electric co-ops fill some gaps. Blue Ridge Energy’s Smart Rebates pay $150 for a high-efficiency heat pump or mini-split at 15.2 SEER2 or greater, and $250 for geothermal at 18.1 SEER2 or greater — you file a rebate form with an itemized invoice, the ENERGY STAR label, and the serial number. Treat Blue Ridge as representative, not universal: North Carolina has 26 electric co-ops and each sets its own program, so check your co-op’s current terms before assuming any amount.
