R-410A Recharge Costs in 2026: Why Repair-vs-Replace Math Changed

If your AC is low on R-410A in 2026, expect to pay $50 to $150 per pound, installed. We label that figure an estimate — not “corroborated” — and the reason for the label is the most useful thing on this page.

Our rule for publishing a number: three or more independent 2025–2026 sources agreeing within about 25% earns a “corroborated” label. When sources disagree beyond that, we widen the range to cover them and mark it “estimate.” R-410A pricing fails the agreement test — and understanding why it fails tells you more about your repair decision than any single dollar figure would.

Why the range is $100 wide

Here’s what the sources we reviewed actually report for installed R-410A:

Every source lands inside $50–$150, but their midpoints span $65 to $115 — more than 25% apart. Two things are driving the spread:

  1. The market is moving. Mid-2026 sources report R-410A prices up 30–50% since 2024 as AIM Act HFC quota cuts squeeze supply. A price surveyed in late 2024 and a price surveyed last month are describing different markets.
  2. No neutral benchmark exists. There’s no government price series for installed refrigerant. Every published number is a contractor’s or publisher’s survey, so ranges drift with whoever was surveyed and when.

That’s why we hold this at “estimate” and re-verify it on a 90-day cadence instead of annually. A page quoting you one tight number for R-410A in 2026 is projecting more certainty than the data supports.

The outlier we excluded — and why online ranges disagree

One 2026 source, Home Rangers, publishes $150–$500 per pound for R-410A — triple the ceiling of every other source we reviewed. That figure matches reclaimed-R-22-era pricing, and it’s internally inconsistent with their own R-22 number of $100–200/lb. We excluded it from our adopted range and we’re disclosing that here.

This is worth knowing as a consumer: when you see wildly different refrigerant costs across the first page of Google, it’s often because some pages fold numbers like that into their averages and some don’t. Ask which sources a number came from. If a page can’t tell you, treat the number accordingly.

How much refrigerant your system holds

The charge size, unlike the price, is well corroborated: 2–4 pounds per ton of cooling, with 3 lb/ton typical (HVAC.com, JC Energy Solutions, and HVAC Calculator Hub — whose 8–12 lb figure for a 3-ton system matches the same math).

Worked example: recharging a 3-ton system

A full recharge on a 3-ton system means 6–12 pounds at $50–150 per pound:

6 lb × $50 = $300 on the low end. 12 lb × $150 = $1,800 on the high end.

So a complete 3-ton recharge runs $300 to $1,800 — a 6x spread that’s honest, because it compounds two real uncertainties (how much your system holds and what refrigerant costs in your market this quarter). A partial top-off after a slow leak costs proportionally less; a full evacuation and recharge after a major repair sits at the top.

Recharge is never the whole bill

Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up.” An AC is a sealed system — if you’re low, you have a leak, and paying to recharge without fixing it means renting refrigerant by the season. The real repair bill stacks the leak work on top of the refrigerant:

Stack the typical case — leak repair plus a full 3-ton recharge — and you’re at roughly $500 to $3,300. If the leak turns out to be in the evaporator coil, you’re replacing the coil ($650–2,500) plus paying for the charge, which can push the total well past $3,000.

When recharge-and-run still makes sense

This is where the math changed. A 3-ton replacement currently runs $5,000–$11,000 installed (also an estimate label — replacement quotes have their own source disagreements). Against that:

Recharge-and-run is defensible when:

  • The leak is small, found, and cheaply repairable — a $200-end leak fix plus a partial top-off can be a few hundred dollars total.
  • You’re bridging one more season on a unit you already plan to replace, and the all-in repair sits near the bottom of the range.
  • The repair total lands under roughly $1,000 on a system that’s otherwise healthy.

Replacement deserves a hard look when:

  • The leak is in the evaporator coil or compressor — you’re stacking a four-figure repair on top of four-figure refrigerant exposure, into a system that will only get costlier to feed.
  • This is your second recharge. Repeat refrigerant loss means the leak was never truly fixed, and each visit reprices at whatever R-410A costs that month — a number that has only moved up under the AIM Act quota cuts.
  • Your all-in repair estimate crosses into the $3,000+ zone — more than half of the $5,000 low end of the replacement range.

The uncomfortable truth: the same repair that penciled out easily when refrigerant was cheaper is now a judgment call, and it will keep drifting toward “replace” as quotas tighten.

The R-454B wrinkle

New systems now ship with R-454B instead of R-410A. Don’t expect the new refrigerant to be cheap — JC Energy Solutions puts R-454B at $60–90 per pound, and the transition itself adds roughly 5–7% to replacement cost per Green Leaf Air. The argument for replacement isn’t cheaper refrigerant today; it’s stepping off the R-410A supply curve, where quota cuts keep repricing every future service call on your old system.

Bottom line

  • R-410A: $50–150/lb installed, labeled an estimate because credible sources genuinely disagree and the market moved 30–50% in two years.
  • Full 3-ton recharge: $300–1,800. Add $200–1,500 for the leak repair that should always come with it.
  • Under ~$1,000 all-in on a healthy system: recharge and run. Coil or compressor leak, or recharge number two: get replacement quotes before you spend.
