AC replacement cost in Alabama

Data last verified July 24, 2026

Alabama carries a 0.90 cost index — 10% below the national baseline and the cheapest of our launch states. Applied to national installed ranges for a code-minimum split system, a typical replacement runs:

  • 2-ton: about $3,600-$7,650 (national $4,000-$8,500)
  • 2.5-ton: about $4,050-$8,550
  • 3-ton: about $4,500-$9,900 (national $5,000-$11,000)
  • 4-ton: about $5,400-$12,150
  • 5-ton: about $6,300-$13,500

These are estimates, not quotes — national source data for the same tonnage disagrees by 40-50%, which is why the ranges are wide.

Efficiency is the next lever. Alabama sits in the DOE Southeast region, so any split-system AC installed on or after January 1, 2023 must hit at least 14.3 SEER2 (13.8 SEER2 for units of 45,000 Btu/hr or more; single-package units 13.4). Stepping above code minimum costs real money: figure roughly 1.15x for 16-17 SEER2 and 1.35x for 18+ SEER2.

Rebates claw some of that back, but they split by utility territory. Alabama Power customers switching from gas to a heat pump rated 18 SEER2 or higher can get $1,000 — an offer that ends permanently December 1, 2026. In TVA territory across north Alabama, EnergyRight pays $800 on a 17+ SEER2 heat pump, $500 at 15-16.99 SEER2, and $400/$250 on central AC at the same tiers — provided a TVA Quality Contractor Network member does the install.

Permit costs are the one line item nobody can pin down: fees are set city by city with no statewide schedule, and cities like Huntsville publish no amounts online. In rural counties with no building department, there is no permit fee at all.
